Cooking - 6th Day of Gratitude

To start off today's blog post, just a reminder as to what inspired me to blog about Gratitude for the whole of April.

Go visit the site and subscribe by email to get some great ideas of gratitude and how to live in the moment!

In the meantime, I will get on with my post.

When I say I am grateful for cooking, I don't just mean in general. I am grateful that I learnt to cook, properly.

When I went to school, a long, long time ago, we did Home Economics (Sewing and Cooking) because that was all girls needed to know in the 70's. Little did we know our older sisters were marching in the streets. They didn't teach us that.

Having said that, because it was deemed the only skills we would require in life, they taught us well.

We learnt where foods come from, how they are grown, where they are grown, the seasons in which they are grown, how to choose fresh produce, techniques of cooking and all the basics that mean I can look at just about any recipe and make that meal.

I can also prepare meals without a recipe due to having learnt what to put in to a base recipe and knowing which flavours compliment each other.

I know how to make different types of pastry, I can make cakes, bread, damper, scones and of course many other delicacies etc.

As I said, I can make just about anything.

Over the years this has proven to be a very precious skill. I am able to whip up a three course meal on a shoe string! When I think I have nothing for dinner, I can usually scan the pantry and the fridge and find a few things to throw together that would impress the pallet of any food critic. Well, some ...

I know Miss Miller would be proud of me anyway.

So, today, I am grateful that I can cook.

How do you plan your meals, daily, monthly, weekly?
Do you plan or are you a "whip it together" type person?
Are you the cook or does someone else do it at your place?

Preparedness - 15th Day of Gratitude

Being school holidays here in NSW, I have been a bit distracted from my usual schedule, which I am easily distracted from most days anyway.

But having my two wonderful boys home with me all day, every day, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, 1440 minutes a day, well you get the picture, brings about a whole new level of distraction.

On a school day I will get up, make sure they are fed and clean and off they go. I pack lunches, or they do, we make sure they have enough fluids readily available for the day to avoid dehydration and that is it.  Six hours later, they are home, and again it is my problem to make sure they are fed, so they make it through to the final meal of the day.

Food - 9th Day of Gratitude

FOOD, that has been my theme for today, food.  I have shopped for it for the family, I have bought my own lunch, I have cooked and I have packed it away in cupboards and in the freezer and of course eaten it.

So I think it is obvious that today I am grateful for food.
Like my gratitude post about water, we are so lucky to live in such a beautiful country, where we have access to so much fresh locally grown produce. Let's make sure we keep it that way! In my opinion, we need to support our local producers.
I'm not going to go on about this anymore, because I am on a deadline to be in bed, (if you want to know the story behind that, it is here) but I will leave you all with these to ponder ...

All of these were made from scratch with fresh local produce!
