  1. Wow! Amazing article from Jimmy Carter - and how awesome that he challenged his deep-rooted faith & susequently chose to abandon its teachings.

Powerful stuff. Thanks so much for sharing Sandra.

    1. Exactly the part that had me so moved! Imagine decades of being so totally ensconced in a belief system, to have the strength and commitment to walk away and simply trust in yourself! If we could all have that level of courage ...

  3. Hi Sandra and everyone, I am so conflicted about this issue of religion. It is a faith. People are entitled to what faith they choose and how they worship, that said I want nothing to do with their belief system. So as I can't support it, then I absent myself. I think they are all male religions. I don't mean to sound flippant but I don't care that there are 'male only spaces'. I was not a woman who handcuffed myself to a Pub to get into the Public Bar or who desperately wanted to join the Melbourne Club. I am happy for men to be priests and wear the drag if they want, as I believe women are far too complex to be priests. I also like the idea of some celibate men. That said they can do have enormous power and privilege largely granted to them by women. What we need, what I would love is a women's worship space. I am so sad for Carter. I was and am devastated by the 'church' today. My feelings are especially raw after a botched conversion to Catholicism which almost cost me my sanity.

    1. Religion is a choice. Some people choose to believe and some don't. If you believe, you then learn to have faith in those around you, the scribes, the teachers and ultimately a greater being (dependant on the religion you choose). You choose to believe them, you choose to build those beliefs into your life, your values and how you conduct yourself as a person, which includes, how you treat others.

Jimmy Carter would not want you to feel sad for him. If you see the group of people he now hangs out with, and the people he has chosen to believe and have faith in, I think you will find, he believes for the first time in his life .... in himself and his own judgement!

And what a way to spend the rest of a life that has been so filled with service.

Here, have a look at his new gang. I'd love to hang with them for even a day!!! http://theelders.org/

    2. PS I would also say that Jimmy Carter has not given up his faith or belief in God, he has chosen to no longer have an affiliation with a specific religion.
